| Home security quite literally begins with the front door. The truth is that the vast majority of front doors and their locking mechanisms are wholly insufficient to withstand forced entry by even the least capable burglar. What good is a highly advanced alarm system with CCTV cameras and motion detectors if the front door can be compromised by one swift kick? Properly securing the front door of one’s business or commercial property need not require a monumental effort nor a monumental amount of cash. There are a number of simple rules that a property owner should follow so as to provide a requisite amount of security at their front door. The first fact that must be understood is that a simple rim latch is simply not adequate. In addition to a rim latch, a door should be fitted a rim automatic deadlock or a 5 lever mortice dead lock. It is important to remember that while quality locks are important, if the doors and their corresponding frames are weak then even the strongest lock is rendered useless. One must ensure that the door frame is sound and the door is of suitable strength for external use. A front door should be of sturdy construction, a minimum of 44 mm in thickness to firmly support the mortice lock and connected to the frame on three strong 100 mm hinges. Optimally, the mortice and the rim latch should be set anywhere from 45 cm to 65 cm apart. If there are any recesses or decorative panels in the door, they should never have a thickness of less than 9mm. In order to reinforce the door, one may consider fitting a metal strip on the frame side of the door, known as a London Bar, to help support the strike box or a metal strip on the hinge side, known as a Birmingham bar. If the door lacks stability, one might consider having a sheet steel plate or even just a door reinforcer covering the lock area. Frames constructed from timber are certainly more than adequate. It is recommended that timber frames be secured to the wall every 600 mm along the length of the frame. Doors embellished with glazed panels are substantially less secure than solid doors. These doors should be reinforced with a deadlock. The homeowner might also consider replacing the glass panels with laminated glass as they are far more resistant to assault. A front door should always be fitted with a spy hole and a door chain or limiter. These measures will allow the homeowner to attend to uninvited callers while retaining a reasonable level of security. These days, when most people think about securing their residences and business the first thought that comes to mind are high tech security devices such as alarms, wireless controls and cameras. While such devices are an integral part of one’s residential and business security, they do not actively prevent any potential thieves or criminals from entering your home or business. Alarms, cameras and other electronic devices will inform the business owner and or authorities that a break in is underway but should never be considered the first line of defense.
Always Locksmith understands that the first line of defense against residential and commercial intruders are the locks installed on one’s doors. One may spend a small fortune on a variety of high tech cameras and devices, but if the locks on their doors are inadequate then all of the money spent on security is simply for naught. What use is a multi-million dollar high tech security system with cameras and motion detectors if a burglar can simply kick in the door? It seems inconceivable that door locks are typically the weakest link in the chain of security of most residences and business, especially when considering that locks are the oldest and most basic methods of securing one’s property. However, it is unfortunately the case. This is why Always Locksmith recommends that consumers make an investment in high security locks. High security locks utilize additional measures above and beyond those of standard locks in order to prevent potential intruders from ever entering your premises. In purchasing a high security lock, you will be improving your first line of defense against break-ins and insuring a higher level of security for your property and, more importantly, the ones you love. One of the additional measures taken by high security locks is patented key control. The majority of the high security lock systems in use today utilize what is known as a restricted key system. Such keys are patented and may only be duplicated by a locksmith certified to do so. Moreover, keys can even be further secured by requiring signature verification which would prevent any unauthorized persons from making a duplicate key. All of the high security lock systems provided by Always Locksmith are pick resistant. As you might be aware, standard locks can be easily picked by the most basic of locksmith tools. These days, such tools are readily available over the internet and, with just a little practice, a layman will be capable of picking most standard locks in moments. All of the high security locks provided by Always Locksmith utilize a variety of different pick resistant technologies in order prevent even the most experienced thief from picking your locks. A method typically used by the professional thief to compromise locks is drilling. Standard locks provide absolutely no physical deterrence or resistance to drills. The materials and technology found in high security locks makes it virtually impossible for unauthorized access to be made via drilling. High security locks are far stronger and more resilient than standard locks. The materials and technologies utilized by high security locks are all useless if all a potential thief has to do in order to gain entry is to kick in the door. High security locks offer an additional level of prevention by virtue of the increased stability that they offer in the solidly secure way in which they are installed in the door and the doorway. A bi-product of the solid construction of the high security locks provided by Always Locksmith are their long lasting quality. High Security locks are precision engineered using only solid steel and brass components. A high security lock cast from solid materials will prevent unauthorized entry and provide peace of mind for many years. There are myriad reasons as to why the home and business owner should invest in a high security lock. As the first line of defense against intruders, a high quality high security lock should be the first security option to be considered, even before any other high tech options. Always Locksmith offers a complete range of high security locks to meet all budgets and needs. French doors, or French windows, look really great, but are inherently much less secure than single leaf doors. For this reason they tend to be less popular these days. However, French doors can be perfectly secure too, provided that the following security measures are taken. Correct Lock installation To firmly secure both doors, mortice rack bolts should be fitted. The bolts are fixed into the door, and are opened from inside using a threaded key. It is important that the bolts are fitted at a 90 degree angle so that they are less likely to yield to force from outside. Another option is to install surface-mounted locking bolts. One push and they are locked, and a key is used to open them. On some doors mortice shash locks can also be installed, adding an additional level of security. A good London locksmith will know how to correctly install mortice rack bolts, surface-mounted locking bolts, and mortice sash locks. Hinge bolts are also an excellent addition to outward opening French doors. Once again, correct fitting is very important, and should be left to a qualified Provo locksmith. Laminated Glass Typically, French doors come fitted with ordinary glass panels. It's a good idea to replace ordinary panels with laminated glass. Constructed of two pieces of glass held together with a sheet of laminate, laminated glass is much stronger than ordinary of even toughened glass. Generally, it is inadvisable to add new security devices to uPVC or PVCu French doors. The construction is not strong enough to support locking mechanisms secured with steel screws, and any changes might invalidate an existing warranty, and even damage the original locking mechanism. Many modern uPVC and PVC doors already come with deadlock shoot bolts or a multi-point locking system, in which case additional devices will not be needed. If you are uncertain about what type of door you have, ask a qualified Provo locksmith. For further information about securing French doors, and for a free quote, contact us. Always Locksmith can supply, install and help maintain safes, both for the home and business. There are a wide variety of safes on the market which come in a number of sizes and locking mechanisms, and can be fireproof or not as required. Floor safes - also known as under floor safes or underground safes- provide an ideal solution if you require the safe to be kept out of sight. Floor safes can be encased in concrete and buried underground. They tend to be smaller than many other types of security safes, but offer extra peace of mind if storing valuable and precious items such as passports, jewelry and of course cash. Floor safes are equally useful for businesses as well as in the home, and many retail outlets such as petrol stations, shops and restaurants buy a floor safe which incorporate a ‘deposit’ facility – i.e. the day’s takings can be deposited without the hassle of having to open the floor safe door to gain access. A floor safe can be incorporated into just about any place in the house – under the carpet, or tiles, in the basement or in a never used corner. The advantage of a floor safe over other kinds of safes is that burglars can and do break in and take the entire safe with them – opening it later at their leisure. And this has been known to be true even of the larger types of safe on the market – whereby criminals bring their own trolleys and wheel heavy safes out to waiting vans. Floor safes, being mounted in the floor or in concrete, are very difficult to extract however, let alone take away, plus – only the door to the safe is exposed – and this is usually made of reinforced steel making the safe even harder to break into. Floor safes are not especially resistant to fire - but, due to the fact they are in the ground they can withstand quite a good deal of heat anyway; in fact in a fire situation they are often one of the few things which survive. They are however normally waterproof and protected from leaks and water damage. Installing a floor safe can be a little more expensive than having other types of safes installed, due to the extra work involved i.e. cutting a whole in the floor, lowering the safe in and encasing in concrete. Always Locksmith is expert in installing floor safes so call for a quote. On consideration it may be worth the extra cost to own a safe which has been so carefully hidden. Safes come in many different Shapes and Sizes Before selecting the size or capacity of the safe you require, determine what you plan to keep in it. The safe should be big enough to accommodate all your items comfortably but have plenty of room to spare, in case you later choose to put additional valuables into it. The planned location of the safe is another important consideration before buying a safe – make sure to measure doors – both width and height, and make sure that stairs are strong enough to carry the weight of the safe if it needs to be transported upstairs (since some safes are extremely heavy). Use Always Locksmith for your Safe Requirements Always Locksmith only use top brands such as Union, Era, Yale, and Chubb - and we are a certified ‘safe contractor approved’ company, so you can rest assured we offer an unparalleled level of service.
